NEW METRO LINE
Metro do Porto approved, in 2019, the launch of the base program for the future line that will take the metro from Dragão to Souto, following the guidelines of the Minister for the Environment, Matos Fernandes._cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b- 136bad5cf58d_The line will be 6.8 kilometers long, between Dragão and Souto, with estimated costs of around 110 million euros, and with 6 stations following a study by the Municipality itself, which aims to take trains to the center of Gondomar, via Valbom.
The objective is for the work to be included in the first phase of the 2030 National Investment Plan, which reserves 620 million euros for the growth of the metro.
The Mayor of Gondomar declares that, “today, we can say with complete certainty that we will have a metro to S. Cosme” and contextualizes that, initially, in 2008, the Municipality had planned to host two projects, one via Rio Tinto-Baguim do Monte-Fânzeres and another Campanhã-Freixo-Valbom-Feira de Gondomar. For the mayor, this new route has a fundamental advantage which involves making a direct connection with the network, with this line the eastern part of Porto will be closer to the centers of Valbom and Gondomar.
SLAUGHTERHOUSE by Kengo Kuma
The land of the Industrial Slaughterhouse in Porto, surrounded by industrial and residential uses, resulting from successive transformations and urban amputations, is today undervalued by the barrier that, through the implementation of the (VCI) and the Estádio do Dragão. The functional miscegenation of the bodies that made up the old Slaughterhouse is unified by the access head and the crossing described. The patterned and perforated roof adds to the existing diversity and complexity with a shaded unity and conformity that covers the voids between the volumes. Here, what matters is what Matadouro will bring to the city. A new typology of covered outdoor spaces, an urban system of pedestrian walkways, with streets and squares that unite a set of buildings. The trigger for all of this, what captivates us the most, is questioning the rehabilitation, not of one or more buildings, but of making and creating a more ambitious system that integrates something broader, which is the city. The new materiality of the roof, although with an innovative design, refers both to the memory of local construction and also, in its form, to a large light levitating membrane, with a subtle reference to a textile plasticity as an evocation of the great strength of this industry in region.
“For the Matadouro no Porto project, we tried to create a new type of public space. For this type of project, the most important thing is the cosiness of the space, which is why we tried to use ceramic tiles because they are closely related to the complexity of the city. When using the material, we try to create warmth and liveliness.”

REQUALIFICATION OF PRAÇA DA CORUJEIRA by Miguel Melo Arquitetura
This project fits into the macro-strategic thinking of treating green spaces as an urban centrality. In particular, in Corujeira, enjoyment in nature will be promoted, through pedestrian and cycle routes and promoting the dialogue between a building-bar and the surrounding trees, as the structure will work at the level of plane trees. Basically, it is intended that the “new” Praça da Corujeira serve the needs of the population, reconciling ecological values, functionality and well-being. Work should start in 2022 and be completed in 2024. Municipal investment is around 4.4 million euros.
In addition to the two hectares of green space to be intervened, the project, which assumes as a "primary element" the enhancement of the pre-existing tree structure and its iconic plane trees, also bets on a sustainable mobility strategy, compatible with the enjoyment of the park throughout the population. The connection to Matadouro is also part of the plans of a program that promotes the urban reconfiguration of the central axis of Campanhã.
In Praça da Corujeira and its surroundings, "social problems, the degradation of public space, road constraints, which objectively were conditioning the social, economic and housing experience", said the architect. That is why the project arises from the need to preserve, reclassify and revitalize. It is in this sense that the team of designers proposes to take advantage of the existing pedestrian connection axes, which will be "privileged, improved and extended, not neglecting the visual connections" that may be formed, because of the study previously carried out in loco, informed the responsible, it became known that there is a large fringe of the population that uses the square as a crossing axis.
"It is proposed to cross the park area by cycle paths and interconnect with the surroundings", confirmed Miguel Melo, clarifying that the project's intention is "to minimize the impact of road circulation in the intervention area". Thus, "road networks will be standardized in their dimensions, favoring existing hierarchies, namely the connection between Avenida de 25 de Abril and Travessa de Ferreira dos Santos and the axes of Rua das Escolas and Rua de São Roque da Lameira", detailed.
The crosswalks will also be adapted for the visually impaired and in the surrounding area there will be "zones 30" (zones with a maximum speed of 30 kilometers/hour), in which cars, pedestrians and bicycles will combine, in order to contribute to another objective: "to mitigate the accumulation of of traffic and improve the flow of traffic", as well as "lower the registered pollution indexes".
The connection between Praça da Corujeira and the entrance to Matadouro will be made by an artery that the architects intend to be a pedestrian and clickable street: "Rua Nova da Corujeira", named Miguel Melo. On this issue, the architect also added that "the demolition of the wall" at the entrance to the Matadouro would be important, "in order to create visual and functional transparency", proposing, however, the maintenance of the pillars of the existing walls.
ALAMEDA DE CARTES PARK by José Miguel Lameiras
This project, part of the Urbinat initiative (see section below), seeks to respond to the population's mobility problems, creating a tree-lined urban continuum and a network of pedestrian paths, also suitable for people with reduced mobility. Among the main objectives of the new urban park, highlight for the urban regeneration of a disadvantaged and fragmented area through the implementation of solutions based on nature. To this end, an exhaustive process of analysis of the place was carried out, supported by a participatory process that involved citizens, local agents and political decision-makers. “It was the population that indicated the problems of that territory and the project is going to solve that”, certified Filipe Araújo.
The intervention area consists of public land, located between Bairro do Falcão, Bairro do Cerco do Porto, Bairro do Lagarteiro and the expansion area of Parque Oriental.
The Alameda de Cartes Park project is being developed by an interdisciplinary team that includes the City Council, the municipal companies Domus Social and GO Porto – Gestão e Obras do Porto, the Research Center for Biodiversity and Genetic Resources of the University of Porto, the Center for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra and the GUDA (design studio).
HEALTHY CORRIDOR URBINAT
URBiNAT is a funded European project that will run until 2023 and has as its priority the development of healthy corridors in seven European cities (including Porto, which is one of the leading cities) through an innovative and inclusive urban regeneration, based on the co-construction and co-implementation of nature-based solutions, involving the local community.
The URBiNAT team includes Porto City Hall, Domus Social EM, CIBIO - Research Center for Biodiversity and Genetic Resources at the University of Porto, GUDA (Design Atelier, Lisbon) and CES (Centre for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra). The strategic approach focused on quality pedestrian mobility and the definition of a new urban park that occupies a continuous group of these lots and aims to function as a link between the three different neighborhoods of the study area – Cerco do Porto, Falcão and Caterpillar.
The main criterion was to ensure the inclusion of the neighborhoods of Cerco, Falcão, Lagarteiro and other nearby social housing neighborhoods with the aim of qualifying an area with great social and environmental challenges.
Given the intention to implement new healthy corridors, the study area includes the most relevant strategic green spaces (Parque Oriental, Praça da Corujeira, Quinta da Bonjóia, Horto municipal), services (schools, industry, health centers, local associations) and also future projects that will take place soon in Campanhã, (Parque Oriental Expansion, Novo Matadouro, Monte da Bela).
NEW UNIVERSITY CENTER
The dean of University of Porto (UP), who spoke on the subject at the conference "Gondomar and the challenges of the University", no Municipal Auditorium of Gondomar, deepened that, although "there is no specific date for the project, gondomar has an important role, as it can respond to the housing shortage and the creation of a new hub".
In the center of Porto, there is no capacity to receive students, due to the lack of accommodation. "It is preferable to bet on local accommodation for tourism, but where do our students go?", expounded António de Sousa Pereira, confirming that "there is no more space in the center for building new residences, and that Gondomar has shown interest in a project future with the institution".
In January 2021, JN reported this intention on the part of the University of Porto, which reserved land at Valbom to expand, a project that will accompany the construction of the future Souto metro line.
